In a world where leadership trust is fragile, is your profile an asset – or a credibility gap?
Through my experience of late, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern among senior people leaders – CHROs, Heads of People, Talent and HR Executives – in how they show up on LinkedIn. While this may not be the case across the board, it’s becoming increasingly noticeable.
🔍 The Role of Leadership Presence
LinkedIn now has more than 1.1 billion members worldwide, making it one of the most visible professional platforms globally. It’s often the first place employees, candidates, or external stakeholders go to validate who is leading an organisation.
And yet, too many senior people leaders have profiles that don’t match who they are today.
In an AI- and automation-driven world, this matters even more. Technology can automate processes, but it cannot replace the reassurance of seeing the true human behind an organisation – a leader who embodies people purpose, lives culture, upholds values, and shows pride in their people. That is what builds trust, respect, and credibility.
Employees and candidates alike want to see leaders who not only talk about culture but show pride in their people, amplifying the values they expect others to live by. That’s what builds emotional connection.
⚠️ The Credibility Gaps I’m Observing
Too many senior people leaders allow their personal profiles to drift behind reality. I see:
- Profiles still reflecting former employers long after leaders have moved on.
- Summaries that reflect old aspirations, misaligned with their latest company and role.
- Banners with no connection to their current employer brand.
- Outdated contact details.
- Little or no visible support, comment, or engagement with their own team’s content.
These may seem like small oversights, but when corporate announcements celebrate a new appointment while a leader’s own profile lags behind, the credibility gap becomes glaring.
And yes – I know it takes time to update a personal brand profile, and many leaders don’t see it as a priority. In today’s climate, with leadership trust already questionable, a lack of visibility can speak louder than words.
🌍 The Bigger Picture: Trust and Culture Gaps
These personal credibility gaps mirror broader global trends:
- Trust in employers has declined for the first time in 26 years of data, falling from 79% in 2024 to 76% in 2025 (Edelman Trust Institute, 2025).
- Values are questioned: 60% of employees believe their company does not live by its own values (Edelman Trust Institute, 2025).
- Culture feels misaligned: 85% of leaders say culture is critical, yet only 15% believe their own culture is “where it needs to be” (Great Place to Work Institute, 2025).
When trust is fragile, values are under scrutiny, and culture feels off balance, outdated or inconsistent leadership profiles only reinforce the disconnect.
🤔 Questions Worth Asking
For C-suite talent leaders, your profile isn’t just a static page – it’s the most visible expression of your leadership. Ask yourself:
- When your appointment is in the news, does your profile reflect who you are today, or who you were yesterday?
- Would top talent, looking at your profile right now, see a leader they can trust and recognise authenticity in your human traits, personality, and drive?
- Does your profile visibly embody the values you ask your organisation to live by?
- If your team looked you up today, would they see someone they’re inspired to follow?
- Is your team’s presence outshining yours and what does that say about your influence?
🔑 Takeaways for CHROs and HR Leaders
- Keep your profile current. Outdated roles, misaligned summaries, or silence send signals about your credibility, whether you intend them to or not.
- Show the human story. In an AI-automated world, employees and candidates want leaders who embody purpose, culture, and values – not just the corporate brand line.
- Support your team visibly. Share, comment, and engage with your people’s content to show pride in them and reinforce trust.
- Practice credibility daily. Update your profile, align your story with your role, and demonstrate consistency with your values.
