The One Thing That Sharpens Your Personal Brand – After the Meeting Ends

AI isn’t human – just one of the smartest mentors you might not have considered.

What do I say when they’ve already got a plan and I’ve only got 45 minutes to prove I belong in the room?” That was the quiet question running through my mind ahead of a recent virtual call with four senior leaders from one of South Africa’s largest financial services providers.

They weren’t in search of a new partner. They were already well-supported, with a clear Employer Branding roadmap and a strong existing relationship in place. But they were curious, and so was I. Curious ……..… although I’ll admit, a little apprehensive too.

The meeting came off the back of a message I’d sent to their HR Executive who passed it along to their team. They agreed to connect. And even though this wasn’t a formal pitch, I knew I needed to make those 45 minutes count.

So I prepared. I showed up. And afterwards, I reflected.

Because when you’re invited to speak into a space that already feels full – how you show up matters more than ever.

💭 After the Call: I Couldn’t Just Close the Tab

The conversation was exploratory and constructive. They asked excellent questions – especially around differentiation. They affirmed the discussion was valuable and kept the door open.

Still, something niggled. Not regret. Not disappointment. Just the sense that this moment deserved more than a tick-box and a “thanks for the time.”

They gave me their gift of time. I owed it to them – and to myself – to reflect mindfully on whether I used it well, made an impression, and offered value.

🧠 That’s When I Turned to My Co-Pilot

Let me say this upfront: AI isn’t human. It has no heartbeat. But it can add massive value when used intentionally.

I opened my Co-Pilot – not to fix anything, but to reflect. Together, we unpacked:

  • What I landed well and clearly
  • Where I could’ve been sharper – and my areas for improvement
  • What, in my Co-Pilot’s opinion, I could have communicated differently

I even asked: “On a scale of 1 to 10 – how well did I communicate what makes me different?” “And what would move that one point higher next time –  and how can I get closer to a 10?”

That pause between conversation and conclusion. That’s where clarity lives.

✅ Takeaways for People Leaders, Talent Specialists, Business Owners and Founders

Whether you’re leading people, building a business, shaping talent strategy or representing your team’s thinking – you’ve likely had a conversation where your voice, relevance, or contribution wasn’t fully clear.

Here’s what helped me and what might help you next time:

  1. Respect the Room: Do your prep. Bring something meaningful. When people give you their time – show up ready to offer something of substance.
  2. Don’t Close the Tab Too Quickly: After any meaningful conversation, pause to ask:
  • Did I communicate what matters most?
  • Was there anything I avoided, rushed, or over-explained?
  • Where could I bring more clarity or confidence next time?
  1. Record. Transcribe. Face It. Use Otter, Fathom, or Descript. Then look at:
  • What they said.
  • What you said.
  • The gaps. The hard truths.

It’s all there. No place to hide but every opportunity to improve.

  1. Prompt With Honesty (and a Bit of Humour). Use your Co-Pilot as a neutral sounding board – not a judge, just a mirror. Ask:
  • Where was I good?
  • Where was I vague? Where did I waffle?
  • What actually landed – even if I didn’t plan it that way?
  • What would one small shift look like next time?

👉 And always ask: Where are my gaps? Where’s the opportunity to learn, stretch, and grow? Ask that every time. Don’t wait for something to go wrong.

  1. Rate to Refocus: Take 30 seconds to give yourself a score even if it’s gut instinct. Not perfection. Just progress. Then ask: “What’s one shift I’d make next time to raise the bar?”

🔄 Final Thought

This was a lesson for me in itself: Never stop asking yourself – where can I improve, or do better – as you close out a conversation.

  • Don’t move on too fast > Reflect > Unpack it > Use it.
  • This is how we learn, stretch, and grow.
  • Conversation by conversation. Call by call.

📥 So here’s my challenge to you:

After your next high-stakes conversation – whether with your team, a stakeholder, a candidate, or a client – Record it. Reflect on it. Run it through your Co-Pilot.

You’ll be amazed at what you hear in the replay.

Because your relevance isn’t defined by what you say in the moment – It’s refined by how you choose to grow from it.
